The Process of Fusing Glass
Fusing glass is done in a kiln, brick or fiber board oven. Kilns come in many sizes. Currently I use a table top kiln. I pick the colors of glass I want to use. I cut pieces the size and shape I want from those sheets of glass. I stack the pieces and place them on a prepared shelf in the kiln. The basic types of schedules are slump, tack fuse, contour fuse, full fuse and casting. I usually use Full fuse for my jewelry. I heat it up slowly holding at 1230 degrees F to let the air escape. I then go up to top temp 1490 degrees F and hold it. Then I let it cool down to 900 degrees F and hold it there to anneal the piece then I let it cool down to room temperature. Every time I put a piece in the kiln it will be in there for 12 to 18 hours. Frequently I run my pieces through multiple firings. Making glass jewelry is a time consuming process. When you purchase jewelry from me you are getting all my hours of learning techniques and experience. As well as the materials and time involved you also have equipment and supplies you need regularly.
